Porcelain Inlays & Onlays
A conservative alternative to crowns for moderately damaged teeth, preserving more natural structure.
Inlays and onlays are custom porcelain restorations for moderate damage from decay or trauma, more than a filling needs but less than a full crown.
- InlayRepairs damage to the biting surface of a tooth.
- OnlayRepairs the biting surface and one or more chewing cusps when the damage extends beyond the center of the tooth.
- Damaged or decayed teethRepair broken, fractured, or decayed teeth while removing as little healthy structure as the repair allows.
- Failed older fillingsReplace older fillings that have fractured with a durable, natural-looking restoration.
- Larger restorationsRestore a larger area when a composite (white) filling may not be strong enough.
- PorcelainNaturally translucent porcelain can be closely matched to your tooth. Once bonded to the remaining tooth, it can provide more strength than composite for a larger repair and a more tooth-like appearance than a conventional silver filling.
- Other materialsInlays and onlays can also be made from composite or gold. We recommend the material that fits the tooth, the size of the repair, and your goals.
- Conservative repairThe restoration bonds to the remaining tooth, preserving more natural structure than a full crown usually requires.
- Cosmetic refinementA carefully matched restoration can repair damage while improving the tooth's shape and appearance.
Inlays and onlays are a more conservative treatment approach than crowns because they don't require as much of the tooth structure to be removed. Porcelain inlays and onlays are very effective and highly durable. With proper care, they will last much longer than conventional fillings.
Two appointments are usually required for an inlay or onlay procedure. During your first visit, impressions are taken to create your custom inlay or onlay, and a temporary restoration is placed for added protection until your next appointment. During your second appointment, your new custom inlay or onlay is carefully fitted and cemented into place. We will make any necessary adjustments to ensure the perfect fit. At Hingham Dentistry, we use the latest technology and highest quality materials to produce inlays and onlays that offer superior fit, function, and esthetics. Following treatment, we will provide instructions for the care of your new dental restoration. Proper oral hygiene, good eating habits, and regular dental visits help maintain the life of your new inlay or onlay; as with most dental restorations, they may someday require replacement. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions about inlays and onlays or wish to schedule a consultation.

Porcelain Inlays & Onlays questions, answered.
These answers cover the usual starting points. Call the office when your situation needs a more specific answer.
What is the difference between an inlay and an onlay?
- An inlay repairs damage to the biting surface of a tooth, while an onlay is used when one or more chewing cusps also need repair.
When would I need an inlay or onlay instead of a filling?
- Inlays and onlays are recommended for moderate damage, more than a filling needs but less than a full crown, such as damaged or decayed teeth, failed older fillings, or larger restorations where composite isn't ideal.
How many visits does an inlay or onlay take?
- Treatment usually takes two visits. We take impressions and place a temporary at the first visit, then check the fit, make any needed adjustments, and cement your custom restoration at the second.
How long do porcelain inlays and onlays last?
- Good oral hygiene, sensible eating habits, and regular exams can help them last longer than conventional fillings. Like other restorations, they may eventually need replacement.
Why would I choose an inlay or onlay over a crown?
- Inlays and onlays are a more conservative option that preserves more of your natural tooth structure than a full crown, while still providing a durable restoration.
